Man Jailed for Extreme Neglect of 18 Collie Dogs in "Appalling" Conditions
A man has been sentenced to 12
months in prison for subjecting 18 collie dogs to severe neglect in his caravan home in Iddesleigh, Devon.
Stephen Sturman, 61, was reported missing in February last year, prompting police to visit his residence. Upon arrival, officers were met with an overwhelming stench and initially denied entry by Sturman’s wife, Rachel. Once inside, they discovered the dogs living in cramped, filthy conditions—undernourished and suffering from extreme distress.
Veterinary experts confirmed the animals endured prolonged neglect, anxiety, and fear. Tragically, three dogs died after being fatally attacked by others. Two of the deceased dogs were found dumped in bags in the garden, while a third lay just feet from the caravan, trampled over by the owners.
Rachel Sturman, 53, was sentenced to 10 months in prison, suspended for 18 months. She has been banned from keeping animals for 15 years, while her husband received a lifetime ban. Both were also ordered to pay £2,000 each towards RSPCA costs.
District Judge Stuart Smith condemned the conditions as "horrific and utterly uninhabitable," emphasizing the extreme suffering endured by the dogs.
All surviving dogs have since been rescued and rehomed.
