Arkansas and Calipari Shock Pitino and No. 2 St. John's to Advance to Sweet 16 in March Madness
Arkansas Upsets No. 2 St. John’s 75-66 to Reach Sweet 16 in NCAA Tournament
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In a gritty and physical second-round showdown, No. 10 Arkansas capitalized on a poor shooting performance by No. 2 St. John’s, claiming a 75-66 victory to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA men’s tournament.
The highly anticipated coaching battle between rivals John Calipari and Rick Pitino became a grind-it-out contest, heavily influenced by the officials. The two teams combined for 44 personal fouls and 58 free-throw attempts, reflecting the intense, physical nature of the game.
St. John’s struggled to overcome Arkansas’ length and athleticism, shooting just 28% from the field. The Red Storm were particularly cold from beyond the arc, making only 2 of 22 three-point attempts.
Despite a strong push from St. John’s, who fought back from a 22-14 deficit to briefly take a 28-27 lead in the first half, they could not keep up with Arkansas. The Razorbacks closed the half on a 7-0 run to lead 35-32 at the break.
This victory marks the fourth Sweet 16 appearance in five seasons for Arkansas. The Razorbacks will now face the winner of the No. 3 Texas vs. No. 11 Drake matchup in their next game.
